Mom and I Part Two
Arletta Jessica McDowell POV
Damn! How did Mom know about that incident? Did Sammy deliberately tattle on our problems to Mom? "How did you know?"
I did not want to answer Mom's previous question because I wanted to know how she knew and wanted reassurance from her. I did not like the way Sammy always reported our arguments to Mom. Were we little kids who needed our parents' help to solve every problem? How ridiculous!
Mom smiled at me. She did not seem to blame me. "Sammy called here earlier. He asked if you were home yet."
"So?"
Why did Sammy call Mom when he clearly knew that I was still in the hospital waiting room? He was such an ignorant man!
"Sammy said that you did not give him a chance to explain what he said when you argued on the phone. You also deliberately turned off the cell phone, even though he had tried to call back more than ten times."
How could I possibly put up with Sammy's behaviour? He was no different from Dad, and I did not want to marry a man like that! How did I break up with Sammy?
I snorted, unable to bear the thought of Sammy's behaviour. I was fed up with my boyfriend's childish behaviour! Why did he bring Mom into our problems? He was such a shameless guy.
"He started the fight, and I was tired of his bad behaviour."
I was just being calm, but he threw a tantrum. How could I not be annoyed by Sammy's obnoxious behaviour like that? He knew where I was; instead of coming there, he called and raised a ruckus on the phone! "What did he say to you?" Mom asked with a serious look.
I wanted to forget the unnecessary fight with Sammy, but I had to answer since Mom asked.
"He blamed me for not informing him about the progress of her health, even though I told him that I would go to the hospital, and I messaged him before going there." I answered Mom's question while putting the luggage on the table near the sofa.
"Was that all?" Mom asked an additional question, and I turned to her.
"I told him not to panic, but he kept stirring up trouble. I deliberately disconnected the phone because I was annoyed with him and our conversations." I still answered Mom's question as politely as possible, even though the urge to end this ridiculous conversation grew bigger than ever.
"Lizzy, what Sammy was doing was a form of attention. If he did not love you, then he would not have contacted you." Mom started to advise, even though I disagreed with her opinion.
What kind of love made a partner uncomfortable? If Sammy had cared so much about me, he could have said it nicely, and we would not have fought like last night. "Sammy is selfish, Mom. Please stop defending him."
I could not stand hearing Mom defend Sammy. If I had known another man better than him, especially in his attitude, then surely I would have chosen him instead.
"I am not defending him. Sammy is a good guy. If he was a trouble maker, then since you guys got close, I would have known right away." Mom explained with a smile. She did not seem offended by my statement, but I was worried. Did Mom really want to reconcile us because she could not bear Sammy's whining?
I exhaled, then looked the other way, holding back my emotions. I was not angry with Mom but with Sammy. He was deliberately seeking Mom's support so that he could make up with me again.
"What food did you take away from the hospital, Lizzy?" Mom seemed to divert the question deliberately, so she asked about food. I refocused my attention towards Mom.
"I took away the signature triple cheeseburger, onion fries, avocado juice mixed strawberry, and choco lava." I mentioned some of the names of the food that had been ordered from the hospital and did not regret that action because I did not want to go down to the dining room to have dinner there.
"You ordered so much food. Does it taste good?" asked Mom enthusiastically.
I was grateful that Mom had stopped talking about the boring topic of my fight with Sammy. We would rather talk about food.
"Yes, Mom. The food and drinks they cook are delicious. The chef there deserves an award. The service I received was also very good," I replied, matter-of-factly.
I thought of Stella. I wanted to promote that girl in front of Mom, so that she could be promoted or become a permanent employee at the hospital, so there would be an increase in income. I knew it was very difficult to become permanent staff there, as they had to pass a rigorous selection process unless luck was on their side.
"Ou, really? Can I taste it a bit?"
If Mom asked for something like that, it meant that she was interested in trying it out. This was a good sign, because who knew, this could be a golden opportunity for workers who deserve it.
"Sure, Mom. Wait a moment."
I turned to the table, opened the brown bag, and took out the contents one by one. I placed all the food and drinks on the table and then looked at Mom, who had been watching my actions. "What do you want to eat?"
"I want to taste everything, but only in small portions."

I nodded. "Alright. I will be looking for cuttleries here, Mom. They should be prepared for it."
For some reason, I even held the same brown bag and took out the contents again. As it turned out, gold-coloured spoons, forks, and knives were wrapped in transparent white plastic. In addition, several packs of napkins and paper towels were in luxurious gold-coloured packaging.
Not only that, I noticed there was a light pink card that said: Thank you for the order, Princess. Enjoy the meal, and we wish you a speedy recovery.
"Wow."
I did not expect to be given all these things, and somehow, the hospital's concern touched me. This was my first time getting special treatment from them. Yeah, this card and the sentences written there were beyond my expectation. "What was wrong, Lizzy?" asked Mom, which stunned me.
"Look at this, Mom," I replied, turning to her.
I gave the card to Mom, who accepted it. She read what was written there but has not commented yet. Was Mom wondering who gave me the card and put it in the brown bag I had been carrying before leaving the hospital? "Lizzy, before you left there did you check what was in the bag?" Mom asked, holding up a card. Her gaze was fixed on me, but I did not feel intimidated at all.
I shook my head. "No, Mom. I did not check and went straight out of the VIP lounge," I answered confidently.
"Hm. Are you-"
