Chapter 17: The Secret of The Harris Family
Chapter 17: The Secret of The Harris Family
Charlotte had stopped eating upon hearing her words.
Victoria’s voice rang again, “That night was the most depressed and painful night in Lance’s life.”
Her eyes were set on the wisteria and roses which had crept along the wall in the courtyard, and her
son’s bearing on that night five years ago had suddenly materialized before her eyes again.
“When you had called him that night and promised to elope with him, he was on cloud nine that he had
even skipped his meal, and all he did was only urging me to pack overnight so that we could leave City
B together.”
“In actual fact, someone from the Harris family had come over three days before your call as they had
wanted to bring him back. He is the bloodline of the Harris family; hence he naturally possesses the Belongs to (N)ôvel/Drama.Org.
secret of the Harris family. The reason that they had come for him was because he had to return to his
place when he turned twenty-three in order to safeguard that secret.”
Charlotte’s brows were slightly knitted as she had recalled that Lawrence did inform her that he wished
to divulge his secret to her after they had eloped together during their call on that fateful night.
Unfortunately, she did not have the chance to be able to hear from him anymore.
“That night, Lance had told me that he wanted to let you in on his secret which was not to be revealed
to anyone before he left City B as he wanted you to make the call of whether both of you should go
back to the Harris family together or live your own life outside.”
“He had already decided that he would renounce his rights of inheritance in the Harris family in order to
protect you if you were to return to the Harris family with him, and if you ever chose to run away with
him, he would be willing to shoulder the consequences of not being able to safeguard that secret for
the Harris family as well. However, you…”
Victoria turned her head back and cast a glance towards Charlotte as she continued, “I still
remembered that he had come back in a drenched state that night looking extremely undone and
disheartened, and he told me that he had been dumped by you. He sat on these steps at that time and
drank his sorrows away bottle by bottle, falling asleep when he was drunk and continued drinking when
he came to. I just let him be as I knew how devastated he was at heart.”
“However, when I had woken up afterwards, I found out that he had collapsed on the steps with his
whole body covered with blood, but he was still cutting his own body with a knife and asking me
incessantly, why couldn’t he feel any pain?”
Victoria was still able to recall clearly that hair-raising and horrifying incident despite many years had
passed by as it was such a dreadful sight.
She was frightened out of her wits at that time, and when she had insisted to send Lawrence to the
hospital while urging him to not take things too hard, he grabbed her hand instead and shook his head
with tears welling up in his eyes, and he let out a low laugh in the end, “I’m not trying to commit suicide,
Mom. I just want to know whether I will feel any pain. You have no idea what I have done after
Charlotte has broken up with me. I have slept with someone else too, so we’re never going back to
whom we used to be anymore. It’s impossible to go back anymore…”
Bang!
Charlotte suddenly knocked over the bowl in front of her without any warning after Victoria had just
finished her words, and she started to shriek with pain, “That’s enough, Victoria. I beg of you, please
don’t say anything anymore.”
She squatted down on the ground with her face buried in her hands as she whimpered mournfully and
apologized repeatedly, “I’m sorry, Victoria. I’m truly sorry to have let him down, It’s all my fault!”
Charlotte got up on her feet by holding on to the edge of the table after wailing her heart out, and she
proceeded to rush out the door in the next instant like a gust of wind while stumbling past Victoria.
“Lotta.” Victoria’s anxious voice sounded from the back as she tried to stop Charlotte from leaving, “I
don’t know what happened to you. However, Lance will definitely help you out if you had got to
undertake all bitterness. Trust me.”
Charlotte quickened her pace upon hearing her affirmation and rushed out without even looking back at
her, and she had run all the way out of the courtyard in just a few seconds.
However, she had failed to notice that a black Bentley was heading towards her after making a turn at
the corner as she was still caught up in her emotions.
When she had finally realized and turned her head sideways, she was instantly met with a pair of frosty
eyes which had caused her blood to freeze all over. She was thrown into a daze right at that moment,
and she stood still on the spot while letting the car charged towards her…
