Chapter 20: Was She The Bride's Substitute
Hearing Linda's words, Cecil scoffed. The sound made Linda, who had boldly told the truth just now, tremble like a leaf. She turned her face away to avoid his fingertips and stepped back to keep a distance from him.
Once again, she tugged her hand away from his grip. Nôvel(D)rama.Org's content.
This time, Cecil let her go and then shoved his hands into the pockets of his trousers.
Surveying her from head to toe, he remarked, "Miss Ye, have you paid so much attention to me?"
Every time he called her "Miss Ye,"
Linda felt that he was being sarcastic, rather than respectful. She gritted her teeth and said nothing.
Why was it that this man could always grab onto the most embarrassing part of her words and hold it over her head? @ Either way, he was right.
When a person was in love, they would naturally pay more attention to the object of their affections.
Not to mention that the man Linda had fallen in love with was Cecil, one of the most famous public figures in Los City.
Even if she wasn't deliberately trying to keep up with the details of his life, news about him would reach her ears one way or another. She couldn't ignore him even if she wanted to.
And since these news reports were about the man that she loved, she could easily remember each and every detail.
This was human nature, stark and apparent.
Therefore, Cecil's question didn't really seem to be aimed at finding out the truth, but more at putting her in an uncomfortable position.
Annoyed by her silence, Cecil asked, "You deceived me into marrying you instead of your sister, so stop acting innocent."
Hearing this, Linda had no choice but to defend herself. She looked at him sharply for a second before looking away.
Then, she said in a low voice, "I'm not. It's just...I already told you that I've liked you for a long time.Is it really surprising that I paid a lot of attention to you? What's more, as a business genius of the Bo Group, you often pop up in the news, especially in the finance section.I major in Business Administration in Los University, so I have to keep up with such news."
"That's a smooth tongue you have there,"
Cecil commented.
Linda didn't know how to reply, so she just stared back silently.
Without saying anything more, Cecil turned around and walked into the villa.
Even after he disappeared out of sight, Linda stood there in a daze for about a minute before she finally followed him.
That night, Cecil and Linda sat opposite each other at the dining table.
He didn't say anything to embarrass her, and she just ate her food in silence.
Cecil was a fast eater.
When he finished his dinner and stood up, Linda was still fiddling with the porridge in her bowl, looking absent-minded.
Cecil cleared his throat to get her attention.
"Do you think...Leona will come back tomorrow?"
Linda tightened her grip on the chopsticks in her hand.
She wanted to stay silent, but she knew that he had multiple ways of getting her to speak, so she simply answered with one word.
"No."
"If she doesn't, bring your ID and come to the Civil Affairs Bureau with me to get the marriage certificate."
Linda's head jerked up in surprise.
"What...What do you mean?" she stammered.
Her heart was racing in her chest.
"What do I mean? The woman I wanted to marry has run away, and her family has gotten me a replacement who looks just like her.I can live with that...but the marriage certificate should be a valid one, don't you think? You can't sign the marriage certificate with your sister's ID card. Are you going to pretend to be Leona Ye forever?"
Linda opened and closed her mouth a few times, feeling shell-shocked.
If she really used her own ID to register a marriage with Cecil, then that meant that...they would be a legal couple.
But what would that make her? Was she still the bride’s substitute?
