Mr. President’s 47
Chapter 47
Some people are known to strive through every challenge easily, making others think they were superhuman. Everyone had a breaking point but it depended on what could trigger them to that point. Mercedes must have triggered Nathans‘. She saw him be so strong, forgetting he was human with emotions just like her. She never understood that whenever her heartbeat once, Nathans‘ doubled. The day he held her hand to his chest, he wanted her to read the beat, that it matched hers but she missed it.
That night when she left him in a vulnerable state, Nathan hoped that she wouldn’t leave but when he heard the door shut, he knew it was over. Everyone was different, with a different fate. Some people were opportune with multiple partners to choose from but some were only destined with one. Mercedes was like the candle that lit his heart, bringing it out of the dark tunnel.
Unfortunately, she also became the cold air that blew out the candle of his heart. Nathan couldn’t take it. He thought he was strong enough to do the right thing but it damaged him. His mind told him that it was over but his heart could not accept it. After Mercedes left that Saturday, he put a call through to Lanre to tell him he let her go. Lanre knew how hurt he was and wanted to come to him but the typical Nathan, won’t just tell him his whereabouts. He pretended to be fine, pretended to be strong but his heart bled with every breath he took.
He consoled himself with alcohol, hoping it would take away the pain but it only worsened. Who could stop his hearts‘ bleeding? He passed out from drinking on Sunday afternoon, unknown to anybody. Jane had come earlier but the door was locked. His phone was switched off so Lanre couldn’t also reach him and since he always appeared tough, Lanre wasn’t worried and thought he was okay.
Nathan laid unconscious on the floor. Bottles of alcohol were scattered everywhere. Mercedes’s eyes were blurred with warm tears. How could she have known that when Nathan was giving her the lifetime bond, he was rather binding himself to her? He needed her and didn’t have a better way of telling her due to the challenges of his life. “Nat, please wake up,” she tapped him but there wasn’t any response. His body was cold to the touch. She feared greatly when she touched his forehead. Hot. Too hot. She found his phone, but it was switched off and won’t turn on. She knew it had a low battery and checked his drawer for the charger.
As soon as it began charging, she turned it on and searched Lanre’s number, dialling instantly.
“Nat,” Lanre was equally worried and was quite relieved when the call came through.
“Lanre, it’s Mercedes.”
“Oh, why? Where is the bastard?” He joked like old times.
Mercedes wiped her tears and spoke. Who else could help her at a time like this? “Lanre I need your help. Nathan is unconscious and burning up in his office. I don’t want anyone in the company to know so can you come over?”
Lanre was worried. He had a feeling that Nathan drank too much but unlike him, Nathan never exceeded his limit so if he did this time, then something might be seriously wrong but hearing Mercedes‘ worried voice, he couldn’t make her feel worse. “I’m almost there. I haven’t been able to reach him since Saturday and was disturbed. He called to inform me that you left him.”
Mercedes‘ guilt increased but she held it in. “Let’s seek his well being first.”
“Have you any idea if he drank?” He tried to confirm his suspicion.
“Well, there are so many bottles on the floor,” Mercedes discreetly said. She only hoped that not calling 911 wouldn’t make matters worse.
“Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.”
Lanre encouraged her and hung up. Mercedes tried to lift Nathan from the floor but in his unconscious state, he seemed too heavy for her so she had to wait for Lanre. She felt guilty over everything. How she ended things between them. She also felt selfish for not considering his feelings. Well, she always saw Nathan as some superhuman who mysteriously found the solution to everything, forgetting that he was just like her. Lanre got there in less than five minutes.
“Oh, beaten by love,” he couldn’t help taunting Nathan, even in his unconscious state.
“Should we get him to the hospital,” Mercedes worriedly proposed. Lanre shook his head.
“This son of a bitch doesn’t use that facility. Take him home and give him some TLC,” he knelt and with his arm under Nathan, he lifted him from the floor.
“What is that?” Mercedes‘ brow creased in confusion. She wanted Nathan out of unconsciousness.
“Tender, Loving, Care,” Lanre shrugged and chuckled. He knew that Nathan was in this state because of Mercedes therefore, it was just fair to give her the responsibility of taking care of him. Who knows, it might just help them to work things out between themselves.
“You are impossible,” Mercedes heaved.
“Trust me, it’s the best remedy,” Lanre chuckled, proud of his plan.

When Lanre ambled with Nathan resting on his shoulder to the door, Mercedes thought of the scattered bottles. She couldn’t allow the janitor or any employee to see this. “Lanre, this is my car key. Use his private elevator. I need to clear this mess,” she firmly said, leaving no room for opposition.
Lanre understood. Nathan was a very respectable president and this wouldn’t speak good of him. He understood why Nathan was obsessed with Mercedes. She always had his wellbeing at heart, even in a situation like this. He felt slightly envious of his friend. Mercedes cleared the mess on the floor, packed them into the trash can and carried it with her. When she got to the car park, Lanre had already tucked Nathan safely so she placed the trash can in the boot of her car, before alerting the janitor to clean the office. She thanked Lanre and drove Nathan to her house.
She was grateful that Angie wasn’t there. Since Nathan was in and out of consciousness, half of his weight was on her but she made it safely to her room wobbly, locking the door behind her.
After undressing him and taking him to the shower room, she opened the cold shower on him, startling him awake. But he was still squeamish.
“Where I’m I? Where is Merce?” Where the first words proceeded from his mouth. Mercedes felt her heart swell but she couldn’t forgive herself. All along, she thought he only cared about himself and his image but he seemed to care more about her than himself. Who knew that Nathan Legend, the man whose name sent shivers through people, will be in a state like this?
“Shoo, let the cold water cool off your temperature. Just save your energy,” she cooed lovingly, washing his hair like a baby.
“Merce, is that you?” Even in his state, she was all that mattered to him.
“Yes Nat, it’s me,” Mercedes smiled, as tears began to flood her eyes again.
“Ohhh,” he was unconscious again. When she realised his temperature was normal, she took a sponge and bathed him, drying him up and helping him onto the bed. She was all wet and took a quick bath afterwards. Then, she put a call through to Lanre to get her some of Nathan’s clothes. Lanre had reached the office but he left to pick the clothes for her. While Nathan slept, she made him some chicken soup.
As soon as the soup was ready, she woke him to feed him and gave him painkillers. When Nathan finished drinking the soup, he said, “It’s delicious, thanks.” His voice was clear, which astonished Mercedes.
“Have you been awake for a long time?” She couldn’t help asking.
“Yes, long before you brought the soup and medication. I thought I was dreaming when I opened my eyes to see I was in your bedroom and where did you get my clothes?” He squinted to the brightness of the room, making Mercedes dim the brightness with the dimmer switch.
“So why didn’t you tell me you were awake?” She asked curiously, slightly angry.
“Why should I? Who knew if it would be the last time I got this close to you? I didn’t want to miss out,” he forced a smile, recalling everything that happened. He felt that Mercedes was only helping him to get better.
“Nat, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have left the way I did,” Mercedes hugged him tightly on the bed. Nathan was confused.
“Was there a better way of leaving?” he asked.
“What I meant was, I shouldn’t have left you,” she said to Nathan’s shock. Maybe this whole thing was a dream.
“Why is that?” He asked, not certain that he was hearing right.
Mercedes pulled away, cupping his face in her small hands, “isn’t it obvious that I can’t leave without you?”
Nathan glared at her with suspicious glints. He wasn’t ready to raise his hopes. What if it wasn’t what he was thinking? “Merce, I hope you know what you are saying? It took the last of my breath to let go when I told you to leave and that’s why I also added that you should never come back.”
Mercedes closed up the gap between them, her face so close to his, she could feel his warm breath. “That’s because you were hurting too Nat, but I want you and I promise to never leave you again.”
Try as he did, Nathan couldn’t believe her. She was bent on leaving him and agreed without a second thought. Mercedes thought carefully about everything she did so how could she change her mind so quickly? He decided to test her. “Are you subjecting yourself to voluntary slavery?”
“If that’s what it takes,” Mercedes smiled.
Nathan was even more confused. Even when he tried to lure her with a house and all, it was difficult and she only accepted because of her brother’s condition but now, something seems to have changed about the Mercedes in front of him. “Merce, I let you go and you came back. If I accept you, then you are bound to me forever.” He laid his claim seriously. He loved her and he wanted her but he feared another heartbreak. The way she left him was unexpected but her next response gave him the necessary closure he sought.
“And you to me forever, I don’t care how long it takes for you to resolve your problems. I will wait and will continue working as your assistant. Perhaps, Nathan must have gone to heaven and back. What could have caused this sudden resolve in Mercedes?

liked it. “Talking about my assistant, I think I have a job for you but before then, you have to pay for almost taking my life so how are you going to do that?” He asked seductively.
“I think I know the way,” Mercedes responded flirtatiously and began undressing in front of him. Nathan watched in surprise, his manhood sparking a fire, as Mercedes pulled down his shorts, taking his phallus in her mouth, then wetting his manhood with her saliva. Nathan groaned to the intense pleasure. Who knew that he was going to wake up to something so amazing.
Mercedes climbed on top of him, his hard cock buried inside her as she rode him hard and fast like a horse. They had their release together, trembling and panting in each other’s arms. “I’m I forgiven now?” Mercedes asked in deep pants.
“No, you owe me two more. This is amazing,” Nathan chuckled. Mercedes laughed just as she heard a knock on the door. Checking the time, she knew it was Angie and quickly put on her robe while Nathan covered himself with a blanket. He would wait patiently for the next two rounds but when he heard Griffin’s voice, he changed his mind and began to dress up.
“Griff, what are you doing here?” Mercedes asked, surprised, as she clung to her silky robe. Griffin stared at her suspiciously.
“I came to check on you. Angie said you were no longer moving,” he said directly.
“That’s right,” Mercedes confirmed. Griffin realized that she stood by the door and didn’t shift for him like she always did.
“But why?” He asked, disappointment lacing his voice. He took his lunch break to come and check on her.
“Nathan and I are back together,” Mercedes said slowly, smiling all through. Griffin frowned, not hiding his discontent.
“Merce, I never expected you to be so weak.”
Mercedes was upset. “This is my life Griff, we agreed concerning that. At least Penelope taught us a lesson.”
Thinking of Penelope, Griffin understood what she meant. “Merce, this is different, I love you,” he confessed. Mercedes has always loved Griffin but she must have misunderstood the love he talked about.
“I love you too Griff,” she casually responded. The abrupt way she did so made Griffin realize she hadn’t understood what he was talking about. “You don’t get it Merce,” he smiled as he spoke, trying to find a better way to tell her but Nathan who had been listening to their conversation was enraged. “I,” Mercedes was about to express her confusion when Nathan spoke behind her,
“He is in love with you.”
Griffin was furious, seeing Nathan in Mercedes‘ room. “You bastard, you snaked into her life again.” By the time Mercedes realized, she was pushed to the side and both men were engaged in a brawl. Griffin was the one who started it but he was receiving most of the punches.
“Nat, please stop!” Mercedes pleaded but her voice was loud. Nathan stopped instantly, at the sound of Mercedes’s voice and looking down, Griffin was bleeding from the nose and the sides of his mouth. Nathan stood up.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. It wasn’t likely of him to hurt anyone close to Mercedes. He was just defending himself.
“Griff are you alright?” Mercedes lowered herself beside him when Angie’s voice rang from the door.
“Are you alright? What’s all the noise abo..holy shit!” She screamed when her eyes met Griffins‘. She heard Mercedes‘ voice when she walked in and thought something bad must have happened to her. Now she realized Griffin was the one in danger.
Griff, what happened?” She bent beside him, lifting him with the help of Mercedes.
Griffin staggered to his feet. Not wanting to sound weak, he said, “just get me out of here Angie.”
