No More Waiting, She Chooses Love

Chapter 650

Chapter 650

When Deborah called, I was in the bathroom, splashing water all over my face.

"Licia," her voice was so drained of energy, it barely sounded like her.

This wasn't the Deborah I knew, who used to talk like a firecracker, bursting with life.

Something had happened to her, but I knew it was her recent suicide attempt that had changed her so much. My heart ached for her. "If you hadn't called, I was about ready to storm over to your place."

"Licia, please don't. I'm okay," Deborah hurriedly tried to reassure me.

I tossed the paper towel I was using into the trash and leaned against the sink. "Then start from the beginning. Tell me everything."

There was a moment of silence before Deborah spoke, "Licia, I've lost everything, and I'm almost a million in debt."

As soon as she mentioned her boyfriend, I got it. She had been duped by him. "So, you tried to end it all? Your life isn't worth a million?"

"Licia, it's not just any debt. I've got student loans, credit cards, and... payday loans. If I can't pay, they harass me online. And they've even started threatening to go after my parents," her voice was laced with despair.

"Why didn't you call me?" As the words left my mouth, I remembered my phone had been broken at the time.

Maybe she did try to call.

If only she had gotten through. If only I could have lent her the money, maybe she wouldn't have tried to end her life.

But it was too late for what-ifs.

Thinking of her fleeing to a place miles away, I asked, "So, you're in Goldbridge trying to pay it all back?"

She just hummed in response, but I knew, with her basic education, she wouldn't land a high-paying job in a strange city. She couldn't possibly earn enough to make a dent in her debt.

Earning ten thousand a month

meant just a hundred and twenty thousand a year. It would take her almost a decade to pay off a million, that's if she didn't spend a dime on herself.

The mental strain alone could break her before she even got close.

And her parents would be devastated by her struggles.

"Come back. Work for me. I'll pay you a million up front," I offered, realizing again the power of wealth to help those you care about without a second thought.

"No," she flatly refused.

"Why not?" I was baffled.

"Licia, I know a million isn't much to you, but I borrowed it. I don't know when I could ever pay you back," her voice faded.

"Are you out of your mind? I'm not putting a deadline on you," I was frustrated.

"Licia, just leave it. Knowing I won't try anything again should be enough," Deborah hung up, and wouldn't pick up my calls after that.

Stubborn girl!

I couldn't just stand by and watch her suffer. I decided to fly to Goldbridge and find her myself.

But before that, I needed to see her boyfriend, John Hudson.

The fact that he shared my last name felt like an insult.

"Ms. Hudson, what can I do for you?" John recognized me immediately.
