Chapter 19 The day he stayed with her
Karla was pissed when her team fails to bring in the boss. Although they managed to confiscate the guns and arrest the buyers, she doubted that they would stay for long. She knows how the legal system works, their lawyers will cut a deal and they would probably be out in no time.
She had spent years only to see that she couldn’t beat the system. Sometimes she wonders if the job was worth her time, it surely wasn’t worth her money. Though she never lacks in the money department but she was not living lavishly as those criminals.
Karla knows they gained more money selling restricted items, which has been since hundreds of years ago. While the law enforcement jobs would pay just enough from whatever budget their government was giving them, opening chances for them to be bought out by the bad guys.
She knows people like Yegor have someone on the inside, that was why she never gets close to her co-worker. She was not a fool, she was actually one of the brightest and she has been watching, learning the ropes and at some stage had felt helpless with the country’s judicial system.
Their influence has been rooted deep inside the law enforcement system. Sometimes she even wondered if her efforts were worth it. And in the past year, she has been less motivated, and her thing with Yegor was like mocking her existence and her values in life.
“Agent Federova, you did well. You should rest that leg, go home. Pat yourself on the back and come late tomorrow. Take the small wins.” Her boss tried to cheer her up, she just gave him a small smile and nodded.
The rest of her team did celebrate the bust by going to a small bar just across the office, but she was too angry to take in the win. Besides, she has never been a people person so they never missed her each time her co-workers go for their after-hour drinks.
Her ankle got hurt when she tripped over one of the dead bodies when she was trying to run back to her car and catch up to the sleek SUV, where the mob boss was running away from the scene.
It was almost nine when she arrived back at her apartment. She was tired and badly needed a bath when Gus greeted her with his deep purr.
“Hey baby, missed me? of course, you do… you’re hungry aren’t you?” she kissed her big ball of fur and carry him to his feeding station. She put him down after giving him a light squeeze, making the cat let out his deep meow as if he was irritated, but then purred knowing she was going to feed him his canned gourmet food.
She smiled and let her fat Gus dine in peace, while she retrieves her cold pizza and put it in the microwave, she was too tired to whip something up. The wine was poured to the brim and she sighed when she took a quick sip while waiting for the pizza.
Dinner was done within minutes then Gus followed her to his little throne by her bathtub. The water was slowly filling while she took off her boots and look at her ankle. She hissed when the pain hits her nerve, not realizing how bad it was until she took off her socks.
“Oh Gus, how am I going to work tomorrow?”
Her fat cat meows, as if he was showing compassion. But he slumped to the small table next to her and closes his eyes, relaxing as he accompanies his cat lady while she stripped naked and rest in her bath.
What Karla didn’t realize was she also had scrapes and bruises from the several time she falls while she was covering herself from being shot.
She always hated daytime bust, but some deals do happen in the daytime. And they know exactly that daytime bust means that the authorities need to be more careful since there could be more civilian casualties.
The Albanians were smart thinking that they will blend easily with the afternoon traffic and all they could find was an abandoned SUV which her team could not process since it’s on private property. They would need to go through their lawyers and by the time they managed to check it out, it’ll be wiped clean and useless for forensics.
Half an hour later she was in her usual white cotton tank top and granny panties on her bed getting ready to end the night. Karla was putting Vaseline on her scrapes and more ointment for her darkening ankle when her phone buzzed with an unknown number.
“Hey,” she answered knowing it was him on the other line.
“Hey, how are you?”
“Bruised, battered, didn’t catch the bad guy… story of my life.” She exhales and continues to put the ointment on her ankle.
“Can I come in?” he asked while knocking on her bedroom door. She let out a little laugh and told him to get the wine from the fridge and two glasses from the upper kitchen cabinet.
He ended the call seconds later and she could hear him opening the fridge and the kitchen cabinet.Original from NôvelDrama.Org.
“Thank you.” She took the glass and drink the wine.
“… it’s for the pain, I don’t like taking pills.”
Her bedroom was already dimly lit, and he curses when he saw her condition after he turned on his side of the bedside lamp.
“Damn it, Karla, you didn’t rest your foot right away, didn’t you? this could easily be avoided.”
He took a pillow and put it under her ankle carefully. She smiled at his attentive manner but then back to drinking her wine again.
“Look, I was busy. My boss said I can come late tomorrow. So, cheers.” She finishes her drink and signals him to refill her glass.
Yegor did refill her glass, just because he was making sure that she won’t be in any pain.
He was also seeing a couple of bruises and a few scrapes on her forearms and the knowledge that she was hurt bothered him. He knows it was a light wound for her, but he did not want her to get hurt. At all.
“Why do you insist on staying in this line of work?” he asked while refiling her glass to the last drop from the wine bottle. He wanted her to have a goodnight’s sleep and he knows that the wine will help her rest better.
She smirked at him but didn’t reply to his question instead she slowly drink her wine, feeling a bit sleepy.
“Will you sleep with me? I think I’ll sleep better in your arms. And ditch the clothes, I like smelling you.”
He chuckled knowing she was a bit drunk already, but at least she was not in pain.
“I will sleep with you and let you smell me.” He uttered lowly trying to hold his laugh at his last words while he was stripping himself naked to his boxer shorts.
“Thank you, I like you.”
“I like you too,” he whispered as she slowly drifted off to sleep.
“I actually like you more, so much more I think I’m getting too dangerous for you.”
His words were seeping into her mind, but she was already fast asleep. She was thinking she might be dreaming when she heard him say that he loves her.
He was holding her until they both fall asleep, that night he vowed to himself that his lover was not going to be in harm’s way. Ever.
