The girl thought Richard no longer suspected her, so she smiled and said, "I'm glad you're a fair person who wouldn't accuse someone without reason!"

Richard noticed her smile and turned to the nanny, asking, "What tasks is she usually responsible for?"

Nervous but realizing Richard was serious, Joy cautiously asked, "Will it be okay if I tell the truth?"

"I can't guarantee that, but it's better than being a scapegoat." Richard realized she might not understand the severity of the situation and added, "I never mentioned that Pearl was sick from the food. How did you know that?

Joy immediately knelt down. "I'll tell the truth! I didn't buy the ingredients!"

Bliss was shocked, as she sensed the situation turning against her.

"Why did you say you did then?"

"It was my sister who bought them. I'm Bliss, and she's Joy. She told me you preferred outspoken people and suggested I admit to it to impress you..." As Bliss spoke, tears began to fall.

"Did you really think that admitting a mistake would impress me? The person you hurt is very dear to me. Do you think I'd just let that go?" Richard laughed sarcastically. "If you think taking her place will work, let me be clear: with your attitude and lack of brain, I could never be interested."

Joy looked down, her face flushed with shame.

"After what you've done, you would deserve death." Richard had not felt this angry in a long time. He leaned in close to the trembling girl and lowered his voice, "Tell me everything you know."
